Mohamed Abbou is a member of the political bureau of the Congress for the Republic party (CPR), the second major winner (29 seats/217) of the Oct. 23rd constituent assembly election in Tunisia.
Abbou was the head of CPR list in the Nabel 1 electoral district and is currently the party’s deputy in the constituent assembly working to draft a new constitution for the country. Abbou is also nominated for the position of minister of administrative reform in the Tunisian interim government. Mohamed Abbou is a professional lawyer and a notorious human rights activist. He is a member of the National Council of Liberties in Tunisia and a founding member of the National Committee for the Defense of Imprisoned Political Activists.
----In 2005, Abbou was imprisoned for three and a half years after publishing two articles on the internet: One of the articles criticized ex-Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s decision to invite Ariel Sharon the-then Israeli Prime Minister to attend the UN organized World Summit on the Information Society during that year. The second article compared Tunisian prisons to the Abu-Gharib prison in Iraq where American soldiers tortured Iraqi prisoners. The latter article was depicted as “offensive to the public order” by the first court of Tunis.
After the fall of Ben Ali regime, Abbou stood out in the media to urge the Tunisian authorities to pressure Saudi Arabia to extradite Ben Ali back to Tunisia so Tunisian courts could prosecute him regardless of bilateral and economic ties between the two countries.
Since then he had made several other controversial statements to the media: Concerning the Israeli attack on Gaza Strip last October, Abbou stated that not only did he condemn the attack but he also mentioned that he does not recognize the “Zionist state.” He then added that he and his party are totally against the normalization with Israel as stated in the internal regulations and codes of the party.
Abbou created more controversy recently when he refused the succession of Abderraouf Ayadi, current Vice President of the CPR party to take Moncef Marzouki’s position. This issue came up after the election of Moncef Marzouki, ex head and founder of the CPR party as the Tunisia’s interim president on December 12th. CPR internal code says that it is within the VP’s privileges to take on the president of the party’s position in such case, however Mohamed Abbou does not apparently agree with this rule.
